About Us
I’m a Scoutmaster in Minnesota. As a part of my Wood Badge ticket, I’m putting together an older scout program designed to keep kids engaged as they get older and “been there, done that”.
We all know kids get busy in high school. The work gets harder, kids get jobs, start dating, pile on extracurriculars, etc. That makes it easy to let Scouting slip to the side.
And that deprives the older Scout of valuable leadership experience and the younger Scouts of a role model.
As an attempt to combat the waning interest, I’m collecting and detailing “mini adventures” to encourage Scouts to stay involved.
My goals:
- Weekend (or long weekend) trips, no High Adventure costing thousands
- Generally, no prior experience needed
- Compliant with the Guide to Safe Scouting (Book of No Fun)
- Preferably not ridiculously expensive, but price isn’t the primary concern
- Not something commonly done, at least with younger Scouts
Ideas so far:
- Dogsledding
- Horseback riding campout
- Backpacking Isle Royale
- Cross-country skiing camping trip
- Lake Superior sailing trip/fishing/snorkeling
My ideas are definitely focused on Minnesota, because that’s where we are and it’s the easiest for me to find, but I don’t want the program to be restricted to Minnesota.
If you have ideas, please reach out.
